It is not only during inpatient treatment that patients can access the specialist expertise in special centers for the respective tumor disease via the interdisciplinary network of experts at the CCCA. Patients also receive further care and treatment in special consultation hours during outpatient follow-up treatment. The high level of expertise of the specialized departments is also evidenced by the certification of the respective expert association.
The growing knowledge of key mechanisms in tumor diseases enables the targeted use of new drugs and methods, even in difficult disease situations. The care of Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) with cancer presents a particular challenge. The prognosis of these patients is very favorable being cured in the long term. The medical and psychosocial needs in this age group differ significantly from children on the one hand and older people on the other. To further increase the number of patients cured in the long term, optimization of care is required in addition to new therapeutic strategies. To address this issue, the CCCA has established an interdisciplinary consultation hours in which pediatric and adult oncologists, including experts from other medical and psychosocial disciplines as appropriate jointly care for AYA patients.
